James Hunley Virtuoso, Humorist

Lasting Impressions the music of romance.

As soon as they laugh, they're like newborn children
taking a breath. That's classical guitarist James Russell Hunley's approach to his audience. He explains that he likes to involve
audience members in the musical experience by inviting them to relax and that way overcome any intimidation they might feel about classical music.

RENO GAZETTE JOURNAL

April 9, 1999
Dueling guitars

Lovers of guitar music will be torn April 9. There's no getting around it. It happened, and we'll just have to live with it.
Guitarists Alieksey Vianna and James Russell Hunley will be giving concerts April 9. That's the breaks.
Hunley has worked at the classical guitar since he was 13. He dove for golf balls to finance his musical habit. Now without the golf balls, he lives in Los Angeles and tours extensively.
He likes to chat while he's performing; one critic praised both his technical mastery and his sense of humor, two things that often don't go together.
His album "Lasting Impressions" has been featured on radio and television; the upcoming concert will feature selections from that album as well as "R.S.V.P."an album that came out in January 1998.
The Hunley concert is 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. in Carson City. Tickets are general, for seniors, students and center members. Details:
883-1976.
Now for Vianna. His style straddles the idioms of classical and jazz; just how far he has to straddle is open for debate.
He received the Tucson, Ariz., Jazz Society award in 1995 and the 1997 Herb Ellis Award for best jazz guitarist at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. He's from Brazil.
His Reno concert will also feature Tony Savage on percussion, Joe McKenna on bass and Peter Supersano on keyboards. The program will feature solo music by Bach and Sergio Assad.
His concert will be at 8 p.m. April 9 at the First Congregational Church on Sunnyside Drive in northeast Reno. Tickets are .50. Details: 626-6302.

Concert Press Release for an evening in the gardens of Spain
To fun for a Classical Concert!
(Time will tell)
That wacky American Classical Guitarist James Russell Hunley is taking his own path to the classical music scene - Humor!
After playing literally hundreds of concerts he has decided to just "RELAX" Sometimes the jokes or anecdotes come from previous events, like touring Oregon (A State of thick forests) during hunting season, he told the audience "other than the trees, the people with the guns makes me feel like T'm back in Los Angeles. One recent critic commented "James Hunley demonstrated a combination of technical mastery and a sense of humor rarely encountered in his field",
Hunley' recording, "Lasting Impressions" has been featured on radio and television throughout the United States. His concert program will include selections from "Lasting Impressions" the works of Albeniz, Lauro, and Barrios and, from his latest CD R.S.V.P. ,Which was released January 1998. He is Currently working on a new CD,"An Evening in the Gardens of Spain"br>
Music critics have described his playing as 'exquisite, beautifully phrased, amazingly subtle and incredibly sure"and as "Guitar de amore "but Hunley feels the audiences emotional response is the real barometer of musical success.
Hunley, who resides in Los Angeles, California, divides his time between performing and producing. His television show, "The Acoustic Experience" is still being aired in northern California, with 32 episodes of acoustic music, luthiers and guests. He is an advocate for de-mystifying classical music and believes in using film and video to visually communicate its internal dialogue.
He has served as executive producer for many classical music videos, including Pepe Romero's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra". His own music video, "La Catedral, went international via the Arts Channel on Satellite, Galaxy 1, and was also broadcast during prime time on New York's KNYC. Mr. Hunley recently produced Maestro Celedonio Romeros final recording "Celedonio ROMERO, POET OF THE GUITAR".
James Hunley will perform on the Celebrity Concert Series at Dixie College in St. George Utah on Saturday The 15th of April at 8 PM with the images of Spain projected behind James Hunleys live performance.
His concert will feature the Spanish Master works for the Classical Guitar
and an insight to the crazy impulsive life of classical Guitar.
